IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English proficiency test, accepted by more than 10,000 organizations worldwide including universities, immigration departments, employers, and professional bodies. For students planning to study abroad in countries such as Australia, Canada, the UK, the USA, New Zealand, or even Japan (for English-taught programs), IELTS is often a mandatory requirement for admission as well as visa processing.
There are two main types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. IELTS Academic is intended for students applying to universities or professional registration, as it assesses whether they are prepared for academic study in an English-speaking environment. IELTS General Training, on the other hand, is used more commonly for migration, work, or training purposes and focuses on general communication skills rather than academic ability.
The test is divided into four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Listening section, lasting 30 minutes, has four parts with a total of 40 questions based on conversations and lectures. The Reading section, which takes 60 minutes, contains three passages and 40 questions drawn from books, journals, and newspapers. The Writing section, also 60 minutes, includes two tasks—describing visual information in Task 1 and writing an essay on a given argument in Task 2. The Speaking test, which lasts 11 to 14 minutes, is a face-to-face interview where the examiner asks personal questions, gives you a topic to speak on, and engages in further discussion.
IELTS scores are reported on a band scale from 1 to 9, with each section receiving its own score along with an overall average. A Band 9 reflects expert-level proficiency, Band 8 indicates very good proficiency, Band 7 is considered good, Band 6 is competent, Band 5 is modest, and Band 4 or below is limited. Most universities and colleges around the world require an overall score between 6.0 and 7.0 for admission.
In Nepal, IELTS is offered multiple times a month in both paper-based and computer-based formats, with results available within 3 to 13 days depending on the test type. Test centers are conveniently located in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and Biratnagar. The score requirements vary depending on the destination country: Australia and Canada usually require between 6.0 and 6.5, the UK between 6.0 and 7.0, the USA around 6.5 to 7.0, New Zealand 6.0 to 6.5, and Japan 5.5 to 6.5 for English-taught programs.
